Critical Land Rehabilitation in the Upper River Area of the Riam Kanan Reservoir

Banjarbaru - PT Tunas Inti Abadi (TIA), the ABM group business entity holding concession rights for mining areas in Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, is carrying out a watershed rehabilitation program (Rehab DAS) on the critical land of Waringin Lama Village, the Riam Kanan reservoir area, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. This area categorised as part of protected forest. TIA who also holds a Borrowing and Usage Permit  of Forest Area  (IPPKH) has an obligation to rehabilitate 1407 Ha of land within it.

The planting activities have been carried out since 2013. The success of TIA’s watershed rehabilitation has reached 169.79 hectares up until now. This continuous effort will result in the increase of water absorption in hilly and river-flow areas, which will have a direct impact on restoring water flow from rivers that surround Riam Kanan reservoir. This reservoir water flow is used as the driver behind power generator turbine which is useful for lighting up the South Kalimantan area.

PT Tunas Inti Abadi Mining Technical Head, Irfan Tri Yunanto, said that rehabilitation activities were not only carried out by the Company in a solitary manner, but also with community involvement. Thus, this sustainable environment management’s result can be optimum and bring economic benefits.

"The company facilitates the seeds supply, infrastructure and maintenance (nursery) as well as increasing the knowledge and competence of planting groups and new cadres through community facilitators," he said.

Meanwhile,  Damhudi as Plant Nursery Manager said that with the existence of the upstream watershed rehabilitation program, the efforts to restore, maintain and improve the function of watersheds carried out by TIA are increasingly integrated from upstream to downstream.

"Since PT TIA came into existence, we local people feel empowered. Alhamdulilah that we can improve our economy here," he concluded.
